Applicants for the class of Student must satisfy the entry standards which are set out in full in the Student Handbook obtainable from the Registry at Napier House, Oxford. Students may attend the General Meetings of the Institute, but they may not vote; at an Annual or a Special General Meeting they may not take part in the discussion unless invited to do so by the Chairman.

Diploma in Actuarial Techniques
The joint Diploma in Actuarial Techniques was introduced in April 1996. The Diploma in Actuarial Techniques will be sent directly to students completing all of the Core Technical stage subjects: CT1, CT2, CT3, CT4, CT5, CT6, CT7, CT8 and CT9.

Certificate in Finance and Investment
The Certificate in Finance and Investment is a joint certificate and will be sent to all students of the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries who complete or are exempted from CT1, CT2, CT4, CT7, CT8, CT9 and CA1. Students who would have been eligible for this Certificate and who have not already received one can obtain one on application to the Exemptions Department in Oxford.

<span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><span style="color:#FF0000">Associate </span></span>
The Associateship (including the right to use the letters AIA or AFA and describe oneself as an actuary) is available to members on completion of the CT/CA series of examinations. In addition to completing the relevant examinations, attendance at a one-day professionalism course and one year’s logged work experience is also required for all in the Associateship membership class.

The Associateship is a valuable qualification which increases the career options available to members. It is recognised internationally as meeting the minimum requirements to be an actuary. Associates have the same rights to vote on matters affecting the future of our profession as do Fellows.

For students who joined before 1 July 2004 there is no requirement to take CT9.

<span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><span style="color:#FF0000">Fellow </span></span>
Students will be admitted to the Fellowship on having successfully completed or passed the Core Technical subjects, Core Applications subjects, two of the Specialist Technical subjects, one of the Specialist Applications subjects and having met the work-based skills requirement.

The work-based skills requirement does not apply to students who joined the profession before 1 July 2004. However, Institute students who joined before this date will need to have met the work experience requirement.

Eligible candidates will be admitted to the Class of Associate or Fellow after signing a Form of Transfer and paying the subscription for the Class. Details of subscription rates for the current year are obtained from the Examination Team in Oxford.

Newly qualified Fellows of either the Faculty or the Institute are required to attend a professionalism course within one year of being admitted as a Fellow.

For students who joined before 1 July 2004 there is no requirement to take CT9.

The Council, may, however, by a vote of not less than two-thirds of all its members, dispense with the examination qualification in the case of a person whose experience in matters relative to the profession of actuary is such as to render him worthy of election as a Fellow, provided that the application is balloted on by the Fellows and that at least three-fourths of the number voting (either at the meeting or by proxy) are in favour.

Council shall also admit as a Fellow an actuary, fully qualified in another country of the European Union, subject to satisfactory completion of all requirements properly imposed by Council which are consistent with the objectives of the EC Directive No. 89/48/EEC and the European Communities (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 1991.

Council may admit as a Fellow a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the Society of Actuaries or the Canadian Institute of Actuaries who meets the appropriate criteria specified by Council.

A diploma of Fellowship is issued on completion of the qualifications and a Fellow may use the initials FIA.

<span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><span style="color:#FF0000">Honorary Fellow </span></span>
The Council may, by a vote of not less than two-thirds of all its members, recommend for election as an Honorary Fellow a person who, on account either of his position or of his eminence in science and his experience in matters relative to the profession of Actuary, appears to be able to render assistance in promoting the objects of the Institute and who is not professionally engaged in practice as an actuary. The recommendation is then published and balloted on at an Ordinary General Meeting, three-fourths of the total votes cast at the OGM and by proxy being required to secure election.

Honorary Fellows may attend Ordinary General Meetings and take part in the discussion of the papers read thereat; they are, however, not entitled to vote. Honorary Fellows may use the initials Hon FIA.

<span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><span style="color:#FF0000">Affiliate </span></span>

Affiliates have the same rights and privileges as Honorary Fellows except that an annual subscription is payable and they are not entitled to use designatory letters. Individuals who wish to become Affiliates will need to complete an application form which will be put to Council for approval.
For further information on Affiliate membership and an application form, see the brochure Become an Affiliate and gain an informed advantage.
